Science, Superstition and Common Sense
Initially reading this essay,"Science, Superstition and Common Sense, we read how Holmes describes how both Freud and Jung have said that we are subjected to the influence of the collective thought of all humanity that came before us. This repository of human thought can influence us at the level of our subconscious, or what Holmes called our "subjective mind." Until we bring common sense, science, and right philosophy to our reactions to these influences, then we will remain subject to them.
Some of the ideas that are common to us all are: the collective idea of God's judgment of humanity, that we are flawed and deserving of eternal punishment. This superstitious idea, not rooted in truth, keeps billions of people under the threat of hell, a sense that they are unworthy, broken, and deserving of punishment. Other patterns in our collective are belief in war, poverty, and disease.
These barriers we perceive in human experience are a result of agreements in consciousness with them, and they will continue to exist as long as we give them power. We do not have to wait on God to change Its mind to establish peace in the world; we are the ones that It is waiting on to cooperate with God, nature, and law. From a deep experiential connection and relationship with Spirit, we can awaken from these unconscious patterns and experience life free from the influence of the collective unconscious. When enough of us wake up from these half-baked ideas, we will allow Spirit to demonstrate through us a higher order of being, a world of peace and abundance for all.
While we do not have the ability to change everyone's mind, we have the ability to work with our own minds and examine our reactions to conditions and bring to them a new thought. With time, we can transform our reactions to be not moved by what we see outside of us. We will create a paradise with us that will be projected into Universal Mind and ultimately make all things new.
“I am not bound by the superstitions of the race. I no longer fear God or the Universe in which I live. I have implicit confidence in the Supreme Good, and I permit It to flow through me and to bless everything I contact.” - Holmes
